In this free Autism Books for Parents Handbook, I have collated some of my most favourite book recommendations. As with all book recommendations, read the books and embrace the information that is relevant to you and your life. Some or all of the information will be relevant. Only you as parent can truly decide what is most beneficial to you and your family.

Understanding Autism Books

I have selected a series of books to support your understanding of Autistic experience. Some of these books include the lived experience of the authors. More include professional advices from authors considered neuroaffirmative.

Autism Level Up

One of my favourite books on the list is that of “Autism Level-Up” Authors – Jacqueline Fede, PHD, developmental psychologist and Amy Laurent, PHD, OT, developmental psychologist.

Their new book “The Energy Manual” – is a written walk-through of all the Autism Level UP! tools and ways of thinking about supporting regulation for yourself or others. Designed with Autistic and Neurodivergent people in mind, but perfectly suitable for all neurotypes!

Dr Luke Beardon Books

If you have ever heard me deliver a presentation on Autism, you will have heard me speak about Dr Luke Beard and theories on Autism that I embrace daily in my own home life. You will find a number of Dr Luke Beardon’s books on the list and with good reason, they are excellent!

Nurturing Your Autistic Young Person

Another favourite of mine is that of Cathy Wassell, CEO of Autistic Girls Network, and author of “Nurturing Your Autistic Young Person”. She has tailored this handbook to support parents with older children or teenagers who are at the identification stage, walking them through the basics in an engaging and accessible manner. She addresses key challenges for this age group, including co-occurring conditions, puberty, and safeguarding, as well as looking to the future, advising on schooling options, and beyond.
