AAC Device Social Story
A free AAC Device social story to support the Autistic community and their families.
As a parent to a primarily non-speaking Autistic child, I know intrinsically what it is to support a child to feel confident in their use of an AAC device. I also know what it is for the child you love so much to feel unsure about using an AAC device for the first time.
A Free AAC Device Social Story
I decided to design an AAC Device Social Story in collaboration with my beautiful Conor and for a short time release this AAC Device social story for free to support our wonderful community. I dedicate this speech device social story to my beautiful Conor and only wish that I had the skills all those years ago when he was born, to have supported him then with the knowledge base I have now.
I hope by releasing this AAC Social Story it supports families just like my own and beautiful human beings just like my gorgeous Conor to understand why they are now using an AAC Device and why it is so important all those in the young person’s life, embraces and empowers the use of the AAC Device.
AAC Device or Talker?
In this resource I have given multiple word choices to describe the AAC device. I always want to use respectful language when speaking on AAC. I have included the use of the word “Talker” as that is what my gorgeous Conor chooses to call his device. Always ask the individual what is their preference and respect that preference. You may find that your family member or person you are caring for chooses to call their device an AAC or a Speech device. Whatever the Autistic individual chooses to call their device is valid and must be respected.
AAC Device – Remember Notice
I have also designed a set of “Remember” notices that can be placed on the rear of your AAC device or on the rear of the device of the person you are caring for. Always ask the Autistic person if they would like you to attach a notice to the rear of their device. This is their voice and it must be respected. Therefore check before attaching anything to their AAC device.

Hi Amanda
Thanks for the talker social story I’m going to print it off for my son to put in his school bag so that sub teachers or sub sna can read it and be clear on how it’s used.
I will forward the link to some others parents of AAC users.
Thanks again
Melissa
You are more than welcome Melissa 🙂
