When you become a Special Needs Parent of a child with Autism or a child who needs clear visuals to communicate/understand the world around them, then you will need to access to Communication Boards. You can either purchase them through the many brilliant online stores usually can tailor them to your needs or you can make them yourself.

I remember in the early days having no idea how to make them but in recent years I have learned through Trial and Error. As mentioned in my previous Friday Freebie Post (See Itsy Bitsy Spider Printable) I am a week behind in my Friday Freebies so I have created this post to “catch” up.  [Read more…]

Itsy Bitsy

littlepuddins.ieEvery Friday I share a Friday Freebie Download. Last week as I was away I hadn’t time to create one for Friday so this week there will be two Freebie Posts. This is the first of the two.x One of the best ways to help children learn is through fun activities. One of Conor’s favorite pass times is listening to Nursery Rhymes, carrying out their actions and singing along in his own way.

As Halloween is upon us I thought the perfect Nursery Rhyme for this week’s Friday Freebie was the Itsy Bitsy Spider Nursery Rhyme. [Read more…]

For Conor

With your soft baby voice I heard you say Mama, mama – what I would do now to hear you say my name again.  I remember you calling my name for a little while before all your words faded away. I created “My Special Book” to help Conor learn about himself in an interactive manner. As he is non-verbal (not speaking yet) and uses visuals (pictures) to communicate I knew I would have to incorporate these two important factors into this learning tool. [Read more…]

Visual Schedule

Visual ScheduleMany adults and children with special needs use Visual Schedules as a way of communicating, providing a means of instruction and organization to their lives.

Creating Visual Schedules and pictures can help them to understand and communicate on a level that is uniquely personal to them. [Read more…]

Communication Passport

A Communication Passport for School.

You will need to create a Communication Passport at the beginning of each school year on behalf of your child if they are unable to create it for themselves. A Communication Passport is like a booklet all about your child from their perspective. You create it with a reader in mind who knows nothing about your child. You can include pictures of your child and his/her family, or any other documentation you feel would be necessary. It is a very personal document to your child and as such no two will be exactly alike.

The Passport I created for Conor this year is actually completely different to the one I had made originally last year, as his needs/preferences and experiences have changed. Your child may have made progress in some areas, maybe they have regressed whatever the change may be it is important to include it in the document as it will all be relevant. [Read more…]
