Social Welfare Entitlements.

When you have a child with Special Needs it can turn your world upside down. Children with Special Needs have additional needs to Children who do not have Special Needs; they will require Therapies- Medications- Equipment to name but a few on a daily basis.

You may not be able to return to work as your child requires 24 hour care & attention, as a result there are various Social Welfare Payments you are entitled to. These payments are there to help offset the cost of bringing up your child with Special Needs and help them to live to their fullest potential.

 

Domiciliary Care-

This is the first payment you should apply for. It is a monthly payment of €309.50, paid on the third Tuesday of every Month. You will need to print off & fill out this form to apply. There is an excellent private group on Facebook called DCA Warriors wherein you will find endless help & advice to assist you in your application. 

Incapacitated Child Tax Credit-

This is an entitlement you can apply for through your local Revenue Office. You will find further information and link to application form here.

Carer’s Allowance/Benefit-

Carer’s Allowance/Benefit is a weekly payment that is means tested. You can apply for this payment if you work less than 15 hours per week/have given up work to care for your child with special needs/are already out of work at the time of your claim.

The payment is means tested. If your child is under the age of 16 and you are already in receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance then you will receive this payment.

Household Benefits-

Once you have been granted Carer’s Allowance/Benefit you can apply for the Household Benefits. You will receive a monthly payment of €35 on the first Tuesday of every month together with €9.50 towards Telephone expenses. It also covers your TV Licence Fee.

Respite Care Grant-

A payment paid to those in receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance, Carer’s Allowance/Benefit. It is a yearly payment made in June each year in the sum of €1375. You do not have to apply for this payment as it is made automatically each year to those in receipt of the aforementioned payments.

Medical Card/GP Visit Card-

You should apply for a Medical Card/GP Visit Card for your child as they may have additional medical needs related or unrelated to their special needs condition, requiring them to take regular medications. The application process is means tested however if your child is deemed to have a long term illness you will be provided with the Medical Card despite your means.

Home Tuition-

The Home Tuition Scheme provides for tuition in the home for children who are unable to attend school due to a significant medical condition. The scheme is also available for children with special needs who are unable to attend school due to the non-availability of school placements. In addition children with autism of a pre-school age may avail of the scheme.

July Provision-

Every child with Autism and/or with a learning disability is entitled to 40 hours Home Tuition wherein school tuition is not available. More information together with the application form can be found here.
